COSRX Holds #1 Sunscreen on Amazon UK and Germany. This Is a Distribution Story, Not a Viral One.

An Amorepacific-backed K-beauty SPF is using Amazon as its European retail infrastructure — outflanking Douglas, Credo, and Space NK on speed and cost basis. This is what disruption from the East looks like in practice.

COSRX announced on May 14 that its Ultra-Light Invisible Sunscreen SPF 50 PA++++ reached #1 in Amazon Germany's Face Sunscreens category as of May 8, following four consecutive weeks at #1 on Amazon UK since April 14. Read at face value, this is a press release about Amazon rankings. Read structurally, it is something more specific.

COSRX has been an Amorepacific subsidiary since October 2023, when Amorepacific acquired the remaining shares for ₩755.1 billion ($556.9 million). The European push — two consecutive #1 rankings in the two largest EU-accessible Amazon markets — is a deliberate channel strategy, not organic virality. COSRX is using Amazon Germany as its primary EU distribution channel, a model that bypasses Douglas, Marionnaud, and Nocibé, and the multi-step distributor relationships those chains require. It is competing on Amazon Germany against L'Oréal Paris, La Roche-Posay, Altruist, and Eucerin — and winning.

The clean beauty read: COSRX's SPF is EU CPNP-certified — one of the world's strictest cosmetic regulatory standards — and does not contain white-cast-producing levels of zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which is the principal formulation objection Western consumers have to mineral-only clean sunscreens. It achieves SPF 50 PA++++ using the Korean approved hybrid filter system, including homosalate, ethylhexyl salicylate, and a combination with avobenzone — filters available in Korea and the EU for years but still subject to the FDA backlog in the US.

The strategic implication: an Amorepacific-backed K-beauty brand is using Amazon as its European retail infrastructure, moving at a speed and cost basis that neither Credo nor Space NK can match. For Western indie clean brands, this is what disruption from the East looks like in practice — not a press event, a ranking.
