Indie K-Beauty Is Now Entering US Mass Retail Without the Safety Net of a Single Viral Product

Skin1004 entered 653 Ulta doors on formulation credibility — not a single viral SKU — and added 739 more in early 2025. Round Lab, Mixsoon, Numbuzin, and Haruharu Wonder are following the same pattern. US mass beauty is now a legitimate first-stop channel for clean-positioned K-beauty.

For the better part of a decade, the playbook for a K-beauty brand entering the US went: DTC and Reddit first, then a viral TikTok product (a sheet mask, a SPF stick, a snail mucin) generates demand, then Sephora picks it up, then — eventually — mass retail follows. Skin1004 just rewrote it.

Skin1004 entered 653 Ulta Beauty doors in September 2024 and expanded into a further 739 doors in early 2025 — a 1,300+ door US footprint built without any single product going viral. The thesis was formulation credibility: Madagascar centella asiatica as the hero ingredient, hyaluronic acid as the secondary, fragrance-free, colorant-free, INCI lists short enough to read on a phone screen. No celebrity ambassador. No single TikTok moment. The brand entered Ulta because Ulta's category buyers saw the formulation argument as strong enough on its own.

Round Lab is now following the same model — entering Ulta with the Birch Juice Moisturizing Cream and UVLOCK SPF 45 simultaneously, both priced under $30, neither expected to carry the brand on its own. Mixsoon (single-ingredient soybean essence, reformulated in 2025), Numbuzin (NAD+ peptide essences on Ulta), and Haruharu Wonder are operating on the same blueprint: fragrance-free formulations, minimalist INCI lists, accessible pricing, Ulta and Amazon as the primary US entry, not the secondary destination.

The structural implication for the category: US mass retail buyers — at Ulta specifically — are now treating clean-positioned K-beauty as a primary acquisition target, not a follow-on once Sephora has validated the brand. That removes a 12–18 month go-to-market lag that used to define the category. It also means the next wave of US K-beauty entrants don't need to win the virality lottery to land 1,000+ doors. The bar is the INCI list.
