Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate

SK-II Pitera ('discovered in a sake brewery, glowing-handed monks') built the entire luxury fermented-skincare category on this single yeast filtrate. Cosmax-tier K-beauty supplied the mass version through SU:M37, COSRX Galactomyces 95, and Missha's First Treatment Essence. Galactomyces ferment is rich in amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and organic acids; the AhR (aryl hydrocarbon receptor) activation pathway is the proposed 'glow' mechanism.

Benefits
  • improves skin radiance, pore appearance, and texture (clinical evidence in SK-II–level trials)
  • humectant amino acid and PCA load
  • supportive of microbiome balance
Example uses
  • SK-II Facial Treatment Essence (Pitera)
  • first essences
  • radiance toners
Mechanism of action
The aqueous filtrate from cultured Galactomyces yeast metabolism on a defined medium, dominated by free amino acids (alanine, glycine, serine), organic acids, vitamins (especially B-complex), and trace polysaccharides and peptides. The amino-acid and PCA load directly supplements stratum corneum NMF. The yeast-metabolite fraction modulates aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) signalling in keratinocytes, an emerging mechanism for the documented effects on filaggrin expression, pore appearance, and the 'glow' endpoint that anchors the SK-II Pitera claim set.
Clinical evidence · Moderate

Decades of SK-II-funded clinical trials report consistent improvement on radiance, pore appearance, and texture; independent corroboration of the AhR mechanism has strengthened since 2018.

Effective concentration range
30–95% as essence base (SK-II Facial Treatment Essence is reportedly ~90%+ Pitera)
Formulation notes
Effective at 30–95% as the aqueous base of an essence. Cold-process to preserve ferment activity. Pairs natively with niacinamide and HA.
Watchouts
A small subset of users with malassezia-driven skin conditions (seb derm, fungal acne) may flare from yeast ferments — patch test if relevant.
Controversies & overclaims
Patients with malassezia-associated skin conditions (seborrhoeic dermatitis, fungal acne, pityrosporum folliculitis) anecdotally flare on yeast-ferment essences — the dermatological mechanism is plausible (cross-reactivity with malassezia metabolites) but under-studied. The 'discovered in a sake brewery, monks with glowing hands' origin story is brand mythology grafted onto what is a precision-fermented industrial product.
Market positioning
The original luxury-ferment essence and still the category template. Honest position: a legitimate ferment active with real clinical work behind it, sold at a multiple of its commodity-cosmetic cost on the strength of brand equity. Mass-market K-beauty alternatives (COSRX, Missha) deliver most of the substance.
