"Clean beauty's principles applied to the categories the movement had ignored."
— Meika Hollender
Meika Hollender co-founded Sustain Natural with her father Jeffrey Hollender — co-founder of Seventh Generation — in 2013, to bring organic, non-toxic products to sexual and reproductive wellness, a category largely untouched by the clean movement.
Sustain raised over $10 million in angel funding before being acquired by Grove Collaborative (a B Corp) in 2019 for an undisclosed amount.
Hollender held an MBA from NYU Stern, where she served as President of the Social Enterprise Association.
Hollender's bet was that the clean beauty thesis would extend beyond skincare and makeup into adjacent categories where consumer scrutiny had been weaker — and that mission-aligned exits (to a B Corp) were a credible path for clean founders.
