Ouai Hands the Operator Role to Susan Kim: The Founder/Operator Split Is Arriving Earlier

Susan Kim (ex-Kopari) takes the CEO seat; Jen Atkin stays Founder and Chief Creative Officer. Cultural authority and operating authority are being separated before the brand visibly cracks — not after.

Cosmetics Business reported on May 15 that Susan Kim, formerly CEO of Kopari, is taking the top role at Ouai. Business of Fashion separately confirmed the appointment and noted that founder Jen Atkin will remain Founder and Chief Creative Officer. OUAI's own LinkedIn amplified the news the same week.

On its face this looks like a standard executive change. Placed in the broader beauty labor market, it is the familiar founder-brand split arriving earlier and cleaner: creative founder kept front-of-house as the voice and aesthetic anchor, operator brought in to globalize the machine. That split used to come later in a prestige founder brand's life — often after visible growing pains around supply chain, international launches, or parent-company integration. It is now increasingly happening before the cracks show.

Why it matters: prestige founder brands are being forced to professionalize faster, particularly once global retail partnerships and parent-company expectations engage. The market is steadily separating cultural authority from operating authority. For indie operators, the lesson is not to mimic celebrity-brand structure. It is to admit that brand voice and supply-chain competence rarely live in the same body for very long at scale — and that handing the operator seat to someone with proven category reps (Kim's Kopari tenure here) is the lower-risk version of the inevitable transition.

The Kim choice itself reinforces the pattern. Kopari, like Ouai, is a founder-led prestige brand sitting in a hair-and-body adjacency, with similar wholesale and DTC mechanics. The hire is a pattern match, not a moonshot.
