Phenethyl Alcohol

A naturally occurring fragrance-active alcohol with preservative function. Found in rose essential oil — its natural occurrence supports clean-beauty positioning. Dual role as rose-floral fragrance note and antimicrobial component.

Benefits
  • Antimicrobial preservative — effective against bacteria and fungi
  • Natural rose-floral fragrance note
  • Accepted in COSMOS-certified formulations
  • Solubiliser for fragrance components
  • Mild humectant at higher concentrations
Example uses
  • Vegan mascaras
  • Natural COSMOS-certified products
  • Floral fragrance-positioned skincare
  • Eye formulas
  • Lip products
Mechanism of action
Antimicrobial function via disruption of the bacterial cell membrane proton gradient — phenethyl alcohol intercalates into the phospholipid bilayer and dissipates the proton-motive force essential for bacterial ATP synthesis. The phenyl ring and ethanol tail create a dual hydrophilic-hydrophobic structure optimised for membrane integration.
Clinical evidence · Moderate

COSMOS-certified ingredient with established antimicrobial studies. Safety assessed by SCCS.

Effective concentration range
0.2–1% (preservative); trace in fragrance
Formulation notes
Effective pH 4–8. The fragrance note must be considered in the total fragrance system. Functions synergistically with other mild preservatives at sub-MIC concentrations.
Watchouts
EU fragrance allergen consideration applies — phenethyl alcohol contributes to total fragrance allergen load. At high concentrations, the fragrance note may be overpowering. Sensitisation risk is low but not absent.
Controversies & overclaims
Natural occurrence in rose oil does not prevent the preservative being synthetically produced for cosmetic use. The natural-fragrance narrative is accurate for the rose association but most cosmetic phenethyl alcohol is synthetically derived.
Market positioning
Marketed as natural rose-fragrance preservative. The rose association is accurate; the synthetic production route for the cosmetic ingredient is underreported.
