preservative
Benzyl Alcohol
Broad-spectrum preservative used in natural and certified-organic cosmetics where synthetic preservatives are restricted. Dual role as preservative and fragrance component requires declaration as both in EU-regulated products.
Benefits
- Broad-spectrum antimicrobial
- Accepted in COSMOS-certified formulations
- Mild floral note serves as fragrance co-ingredient
- Solubiliser for fragrance compounds
- Compatible with natural formulation frameworks
Example uses
- Natural certified eye creams
- Clean facial serums
- COSMOS-certified body lotions
- Natural cleansers
- Organic hair serums
Mechanism of action
Preservative function via disruption of microbial enzyme systems, particularly at lower pH where the undissociated form predominates. Aromatic ring and hydroxymethyl group interact with lipid membrane components. As fragrance, contributes mild floral note via direct olfactory receptor activation.
Clinical evidence · Moderate
SCCS safety assessment completed; COSMOS-approved status confirmed. Sensitisation potential characterised in fragrance allergen studies.
Effective concentration range
0.5–2% (preservative function)
Formulation notes
Effective pH 5–8. Typically combined with potassium sorbate for full spectrum coverage in natural formulas. EU requires fragrance allergen declaration above threshold.
Watchouts
EU fragrance allergen — mandatory declaration above threshold. Oxidises to benzaldehyde and benzoic acid on air exposure. At high concentrations, local anaesthetic effect and skin irritation documented.

Controversies & overclaims
Fragrance allergen declaration requirement creates consumer-facing complexity for natural brands using benzyl alcohol in tension with clean-and-natural positioning.
Market positioning
Marketed as naturally occurring preservative — accurate (found in jasmine) but industrially synthesised for cosmetics. Fragrance allergen dual role rarely foregrounded.

Clean beauty perception
Widely accepted in natural and organic clean beauty (COSMOS-approved). Fragrance allergen classification under EU regulations is often not communicated in clean-beauty brand marketing.
