Mandelic Acid

The 'gentle AHA' that 2025 reframed as the smart-AHA for melanin-rich and reactive skin. Derived from bitter almonds, mandelic acid's larger molecular size (152 Da vs glycolic's 76 Da) means slower penetration and significantly lower irritation and PIH risk — exactly the profile the inclusive-derm conversation has been demanding. Antibacterial bonus makes it a quiet acne workhorse. The Inkey List, Naturium, and By Wishtrend (a K-beauty pioneer of the category) lead the OTC tier.

Benefits
  • exfoliates and brightens with minimal PIH risk on Fitzpatrick IV–VI
  • antibacterial — useful for adult and hormonal acne
  • compatible with sensitive, rosacea-prone, and post-procedure skin
Example uses
  • gentle daily exfoliation toners
  • acne treatments for adult skin
  • PIH-safe brightening serums
Mechanism of action
An aromatic alpha-hydroxy acid (152 Da) derived from bitter almond hydrolysis, roughly double the molecular weight of glycolic. The larger molecule penetrates the stratum corneum more slowly, producing exfoliation across a longer time course with substantially lower irritation and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation risk — the dermatological basis for its preferred status on Fitzpatrick IV–VI skin. Beyond keratolysis it has documented direct antibacterial activity against Cutibacterium acnes and gram-positive bacteria (it was historically used as a urinary antiseptic before antibiotics), making it a multifunctional active for adult and hormonal acne.
Clinical evidence · Moderate

Solid clinical work on melasma, PIH, and acne — including head-to-head trials versus glycolic showing comparable efficacy with lower irritation on darker skin tones; sample sizes are smaller than the glycolic literature.

Effective concentration range
5–10% leave-on (pH 3.0–4.0)
Formulation notes
Effective at 5–10% with pH 3–4. Pairs gracefully with niacinamide, azelaic acid, and BHA. Often blended with lactic acid for layered exfoliation curves. Stable, water-soluble, and tolerant of broader formulation systems than glycolic.
Watchouts
Slower visible payoff than glycolic — users expecting overnight 'glow' may underdose. Still photosensitizing; daily SPF non-negotiable.
Controversies & overclaims
Almond-derived sourcing prompts intermittent (largely overstated) tree-nut-allergy concern — the active is a small molecule, not the parent allergen protein. Slower-onset visible payoff vs glycolic is the principal consumer-expectation friction, sometimes papered over with claim language that implies parity in pace.
Market positioning
Repositioned over 2022–2025 from 'lesser-known sister of glycolic' to 'the smart AHA for melanin-rich skin' — Naturium, The Inkey List, and Allies of Skin led the inclusive-derm reframing. The dermatology consensus genuinely supports the position.
