Chamomile Extract

Established soothing botanical in colour cosmetics and skincare. Bisabolol and apigenin content underpin anti-inflammatory positioning. One of the most clinically validated botanical soothing actives.

Benefits
  • Anti-inflammatory — bisabolol and apigenin activity
  • Reduces skin erythema and irritation
  • Antioxidant flavonoid content
  • Wound healing support
  • Compatible with sensitive skin formulations
Example uses

  • Soothing eye creams
  • Sensitive skin moisturisers
  • Post-procedure serums
Mechanism of action
Alpha-bisabolol inhibits NF-κB activation and suppresses COX-2 expression. Apigenin binds GABA-A receptors and inhibits pro-inflammatory cytokine synthesis. Azulene fraction provides anti-inflammatory activity via inhibition of histamine release.
Clinical evidence · High

Multiple RCTs for chamomile extract and isolated bisabolol. Apigenin mechanisms well-characterised in vitro.

Formulation notes
Aqueous, hydroalcoholic, or lipid extracts available with different active profiles. Standardised to bisabolol concentration for consistent efficacy.
Watchouts
Sensitisation risk in individuals with Asteraceae family allergy — documented though uncommon. Chamomile shares sensitisation risk with arnica and calendula.
Controversies & overclaims
Rare Asteraceae sensitisation not always disclosed. Extract-to-essential oil azulene content distinction is formulation-relevant but rarely communicated.
Market positioning
Sold as the archetypal soothing botanical. The clinical validation is real; the Asteraceae sensitisation risk is understated.
