Sunday Times Rich List 2026: Beauty Founders Listed, But the UK Wealth Exodus Note Matters More

The Sunday Times Rich List published May 15, 2026. Editor Robert Watts noted an 'exodus of wealthy individuals leaving the UK' following Rachel Reeves' tax changes. For beauty founders considering UK exits or funding structures, this is the operating context.

The Sunday Times Rich List 2026 was published online on May 15. The 38th edition shows the UK's 350 wealthiest individuals holding combined wealth of £784 billion — a 1.4% rise on last year.

Beauty founder representation in the UK list includes: Charlotte Tilbury (previously estimated at £350M+ in 2025 in beauty-specific rich lists), Vishal Karia of Affinity Fragrances (£122M, no. 34 in the under-40 list), and Susie Ma of Tropic Skincare (£100M, no. 40).

The editor's framing is the signal: 'an exodus of wealthy individuals leaving the UK in the wake of tax changes unveiled by Rachel Reeves.' The specific changes: the UK's non-domicile tax regime was abolished in April 2025, eliminating a significant tax shelter used by wealthy UK residents with overseas income.

For clean and indie beauty brands headquartered in the UK — and for the founders who built them — this creates a structural question about capital formation and founder wealth realisation. Founders who took outside capital at high multiples in 2021–2022 and are now considering exits face a less favourable UK tax environment than they would have two years ago.

The policy context also intersects with a parallel signal: the APPG UV Safety report recommends VAT cuts on sunscreen — a policy that runs counter to the Reeves tax-expansion direction. These two government signals — tax increase, retail tax cut advocacy — are not contradictory; they reflect different departments with different mandates. But for founders building UK-headquartered beauty businesses, the operating environment in 2026 is materially different from 2021 on both the upside (SPF market policy catalyst) and the cost side (tax structures).
