Henkel Ventures Is Writing Checks for Biomaterials, Not Just Finished Hair Brands
Henkel Ventures co-leading Ruka's $4.5M round is less a haircare bet and more a substrate-level bet. Large strategics are increasingly paying for defensible materials science in beauty-adjacent categories.
Beauty Independent and Cosmetics Business reported within the last several days that textured-hair brand Ruka has raised $4.5 million, with Henkel Ventures co-leading the round alongside Freedom Trail Capital. Beauty Independent put the lifetime funding at $10 million and tied the bet specifically to Ruka's collagen-protein fiber platform — a science-led attempt to displace human-hair dependence in textured-hair extensions.
The real signal sits one layer below the cap table. Henkel is not just buying scaled shampoo or repair franchises (the Olaplex and Not Your Mother's pattern). It is also backing substrate-level innovation in a market with genuine ethical sourcing issues, scalp-safety concerns, and real technical whitespace. If the platform works, it suggests large strategics are willing to pay for defensible materials science in beauty-adjacent categories — especially where the brand story fuses science, safety, and ethics.
This is a very different capital market than the one that rewarded broad clean-beauty branding three years ago. Materials science is harder to copy and easier to diligence than a positioning deck. It also concentrates value upstream, where strategics can capture more of the margin than they can on yet-another finished SKU.
For context, this is the strategic-capital read sitting on top of our prior coverage of the round itself (Ruka Hair's $4.5M Round: Henkel Ventures Is the Strategic Tell). Same event, different altitude: that piece read the bet as portfolio optionality next to Henkel's parallel haircare integrations; this one reads the broader pattern of strategics moving the money upstream into substrates.
