Bemotrizinol Opens a Market, With a Sourcing Gate

Editorial DeskSignal #706 min read

The U.S. sunscreen change expands formulation options, but access still depends on licensing, supply, testing and the final product's defined format.

FDA's June final order adds bemotrizinol under defined OTC sunscreen conditions, effective 9 August 2026, and provides 18 months of exclusivity for DSM and specified related parties. BASF separately announced co-exclusive U.S. supply rights under a DSM licence. The regulatory development is final, but it is not a finished-product launch.

The scarce asset is no longer simply knowing that a modern UV filter exists. It is sourcing the material on workable terms, formulating an acceptable product, completing required testing and releasing it through a dependable manufacturing process. The order permits certain sprays, but does not establish the same route for powders or formulas directly combined with aerosol propellant.

A focused brief around a wear problem may be more defensible than racing to print “new filter” on a carton. Buyers should ask about the finished product's tested protection, stability, format and supply readiness. Confidence is high in the order and supplier announcements; market-wide stock, pricing, allocation and commercial winners remain unverified. A monograph ingredient does not make a product “FDA approved,” and this event supplies no reef-safety claim.
