Zinc Ricinoleate

aka zinc 12-hydroxyoctadec-9-enoate · castor oil zinc soap

A zinc-based deodorant active derived from castor oil ricinoleic acid. Used in natural deodorant and odour-neutralising cosmetics as an odour-trapping active rather than an antiperspirant.

Benefits
  • Traps and neutralises volatile odour compounds
  • Non-antiperspirant deodorant mechanism — does not block sweat glands
  • Compatible with natural deodorant formulations
  • Stable in anhydrous and low-water systems
  • Derived from castor oil — plant origin
Example uses
  • Natural deodorants
  • Odour-neutralising body creams
  • Clean deodorant sticks
  • Body washes with odour control
  • Brightening serums with odour management
Formulation notes

Functions in anhydrous or low-water systems. Effective in combination with zinc-based antimicrobials and botanical deodorant actives. pH neutral to mildly alkaline for optimal function.

Watchouts

Not an antiperspirant — does not reduce sweating. Efficacy against heavy odour may be insufficient as standalone active without antimicrobial pairing. Efficacy highly subjective between individuals.

Clean beauty perception

Strongly accepted in clean beauty as a natural deodorant active. Plant-derived, castor-oil source, no aluminium-based antiperspirant concerns.
