Carbomer
Essential rheology modifier enabling the gel textures that define contemporary clean K-beauty moisturisers, essences, and water-gel hybrids. No skin-active function.
Benefits
- Gel-forming — creates characteristic lightweight gel textures
- pH-controlled thickening
- Transparent gel aesthetics
- Stable across temperature extremes
- Excellent suspension agent for actives and pigments
Example uses
- Gel moisturisers
- Water-gel serums
- Sunscreen bases
- K-beauty sleep masks
- Tinted gel foundations
Mechanism of action
High-molecular-weight polyacrylic acid polymer forms a three-dimensional network in aqueous media when neutralised above pH 6. The ionised carboxylic acid groups create electrostatic repulsion between polymer chains, extending the network and increasing viscosity. Viscosity is proportional to neutralised polymer concentration and inversely proportional to ionic strength.
Clinical evidence · High
Rheology modification function definitively established. Safety confirmed by CIR and SCCS. No efficacy RCTs needed — role is textural.
Effective concentration range
0.1–1%
Formulation notes
Activated by neutralisation with a base (sodium hydroxide, triethanolamine) to target pH 6–7.5. Incompatible with high electrolyte concentrations (causes viscosity loss). Incompatible with strong acids, which collapse the gel structure.
Watchouts
No direct skin-active benefit — purely a rheology tool. PETA-flagged as animal-tested during cross-linked polymer development era; current in vitro safety assessments are standard. Petroleum-derived backbone though COSMOS-approved bio-based carbomers exist.
Controversies & overclaims
No significant controversy. The petroleum-derived origin is occasionally cited in ultra-natural formulation criticism; bio-based alternatives exist but are less common.
Market positioning
Sold as an invisible formulation enabler. Accurate. The gel texture it enables is often a key brand differentiation in K-beauty and clean prestige, but the carbomer itself is purely functional.
Comedogenicity
0 / 5
Sensitisation risk
Low

Clean beauty perception
Neutral to slightly negative in strict natural/organic frameworks due to synthetic polymer backbone. Broadly accepted in clean beauty for its safety profile and functional necessity. EWG rating 1–2.
