occlusive
Beeswax
Foundational occlusive in lip products, balms, and mascara. Vegan-free positioning has created formulation pressure toward candelilla and carnauba wax alternatives in clean beauty.
Benefits
- Occlusive — reduces TEWL
- Structure-building in anhydrous formulas
- Emollient surface feel
- Natural preservative contribution
- Provides texture, glide, and payoff in lip and eye products
Example uses
- Lip balms and lipsticks
- Mascara formulas
- Pomades and hair waxes
- Body balms
- Salves and healing balms
Mechanism of action
Creates a physical occlusive barrier via hydrophobic lipid film deposition. Complex mixture of esters (myricyl palmitate, ceryl palmitate), hydrocarbons, and free fatty acids creates a semi-permeable film slowing TEWL without complete occlusion. Ester-dominant composition contributes plasticity essential in mascara and lip formulations.
Clinical evidence · High
Well-characterised occlusive with extensive use history. Mechanism is physical, not biochemical.
Effective concentration range
5–30% (anhydrous); 2–8% in emulsions
Formulation notes
Melting point 62–64°C; careful temperature management needed. Compatible with all oils, butters, and waxes. Animal-derived — requires ethical sourcing disclosure for vegan-positioned brands.
Watchouts
Non-vegan — significant for vegan-certified clean beauty. Minor sensitisation risk from propolis or pollen co-contaminants in unrefined grades.
